Custom XML files being "checked" by Nu HTML Checker

To whom it may concern:

In past years, it was possible to check custom XML files using custom 
Document Type Definitions through the regular validator.  But recently, 
attempts to check such a file has redirected me to the Nu HTML Checker 
which, unsurprisingly, my file fails as it is not at all HTML.

Why is this happening?
