The problem cannot be reproduced. For example, the following document
validates at https://validator.nu/ with default settings:

<!doctype html>
<html lang=en>
<title>test</title>
<input type=number placeholder=foo>

Please post a URL and the non-default settings (id any) used that
demonstrate the problem.

A wild guess: you may have something in the document or in the settings
that trigger validation against HTML 4.01 rules, for example.
