Validate by Direct Input fails with "Request Entity Too Large"

Using http://validator.w3.org/check and submitting a large document
causes an error response of "Request Entity Too Large" (see details
below) that does not describe what the limit is. I tested with a copy of
the content of http://www.cs.tut.fi/~jkorpela/quirks-mode.html which is
24,085 bytes.

So there is apparently a rather low limit, and this is probably a fairly
recent issue, since I think I have validated larger documents using
Direct Input.

Full error message:

/check
does not allow request data with POST requests, or the amount of data
