Thanks, as far as HTML is concerned it's perfectly clear, your links explained the restriction in XML 1.0, and of course the XHTML1.0 DTDs must then follow the rules. My confusion about "cause and effect" was with the rules, why restrict it in XML 1.0 (or why allow it for XML Schema, resp.) XML 1.1 still has the same "mixed" special case, maybe it's a problem with the design goals. Bye, Frank
