Be it scripting, style, comments, if it's embedded in the markup, then it has to be done by following the rules of the markup language used... and the validator, doing its job, has to check it too. If you just don't want to be bothered: use external scripts. Especially if you're using XHTML, that will save you a lot of hassle.
