problems with validator

Hello all,

I write to you with the following question:  I tried validating my budding
website against the HTML 4.01 DTD, using the w3c's validation service.  It
states, however, that it cannot find the character encoding.  However, the
character encoding is clearly marked, as follows:

...
<head>

  <meta http-equiv="charset" content="iso-8859-1">
...

Any ideas why? any comment would be appreciated.
