HTTP/1.0 Proxy access authentication

With HTTP/1.1, the Proxy-Authorization header can be specified in an
HTTP message, but if one is writing software that must be able to send
an HTTP message through a local HTTP/1.0 proxy (which requires a user
and password) on the way to a public internet site, how can this be
accomplished?
