I find this paper:Towards Neural Network Recognition Of Handwritten Arabic Letters, quite helpful http://www.cs.dal.ca/~mheywood/Reports/TKlassen.pdf in understanding form, classes and robustness to scale and position. May be this would help as a preliminary study?
