Accessibility has often been an afterthought in feature development, this is not an optimal situation as investigating such things late in the development cycle can/does lead to accessibility being shoe horned into a feature that has not been designed with accessibility in mind. It can/does also lead accessibility being seen as an impediment to spec completion/feature implementation. In order to break this cycle we need to collaborate more effectively from the get go and break down the barriers (at the W3C) between accessibility people and people working on the specification and implementation of the open web platform.
