I think it's more like "the browser effectively defines the HTML language, getting the right result with a browser is more important than doing what is right according to the spec, and beyond what is needed to make things work with the browser, fixing things to conform to the spec doesn't do anything obvious to improve the user's experience or the site's effectiveness. (to me it hinges on "anything obvious..." - the web site designer/maintainer doesn't know the degree to which he's hurting himself by generating noncomforming pages or using nonstandard extensions) Keith
