The default for preserveAspectRatio is xMidYMid meet see in the specification: http://www.w3.org/TR/SVG11/coords.html#PreserveAspectRatioAttribute Behaviour: meet means roughly that the viewBox is scaled with preserved aspect ratio until it fits at one side to the viewport and the other side is not larger as the viewport. xMidYMid means roughly, that the result is centered. I think, this explains already your examples
