Hello www-svg, > 14.1.1 - "When a 'use' element references an external element ... MUST > NOT contain..." > > Rather harsh restrictions on <use> - this and the restrictions on > <image> seem to force the introduction of <animation>, which isn't > needed otherwise. 'use' has several other differences, especially in the area of use of fragment identifiers, clipping, viewboxes (particularly when extended to point to symbol elements in Full), property inheritance, and behavior when there are multiple references to the same instance. Since there seems to be some confusion about this, we have added a table to the linking chapter that shows what the different elements that can take an xlink href do. In summary, we feel that the three elements 'image', 'use' and 'animation' all have their part to play. Please let us know shortly if this response does not satisfy your comment. -- Chris Lilley mailto:chris@w3.org Chair, W3C SVG Working Group W3C Graphics Activity Lead Co-Chair, W3C Hypertext CG
