thanks everybody for help, your suggestions have been very helpfull,
especially doug's. "baseline-shift=-80%" does the trick

i am using it now as

<text x="100" y="50" font-size="12" text-anchor="middle"
baseline-shift="-80%">blah</text>

and it shows up as i wanted, although it is drawn slightly lower in adobe
viewer then in squigle, but i can tweak it.
