escape characters in svg

My apologies if the answer to this question is glaringly obvious.
I just cannot find it after a bit of trawling.

I want to include xml escapes for characters like the Euro symbol
in svg viz. &#x20ac;
Currently I cannot get these to render with adobe viewer.
