commonly used?  that surely depends on
who you are...

(the newer the graphics api, the lower the chance
that it has strong support for cross hatching etc.
even die-hard plotter users tend to use other out-
put devices these days...  the mere fact that SVG
allows you to use them without resorting to bitmap
patterns is impressive enough, imho...)
