I was wondering about dynamic content in SMIL. I was hoping to be able to display text that can be updated by an external program and is displayed at the bottom of each slide in a constantly looping slideshow. It can be based on either an external source and bringing in the text using <text ref="blurb.txt" ... /> or could be SMIL+XHTML and update the text in the tree directly. I read the message replying to "How to control dynamic content?" (http://lists.w3.org/Archives/Public/www-smil/2000OctDec/0025.html) but the data is most likely going to be loaded locally, though if need be we could probably set up a local web server on the system. I'm not against scripting however I'm uncertain as to what scripting languages most SMIL viewers support (do many of them have ECMAScript support for example). Even with scripting is there a way of informing the SMIL viewer to clear the cached object and reload it from source (assuming we aren't using the second approach to use XHTML and update the DOM Tree with the new message).
