In reading the wish-lists for codecs, it seems that people forget that many of the popular codecs are not public domain. Since they require licensing agreements with IPR owners, integrating them into the standard and thus requiring anyone implementing that standard to conclude licensing deals, strikes me as a bit unrealistic.
