Real Player Ranks 10th
While RealNetworks RealPlayer is not the only SMIL game in town, there is
no doubt that what is good for RealPlayer is good for SMIL. News.com
reports that according to Media Metrix, home use of RealPlayer in the last
six months has jumped. RealPlayer is now the 10th most used Windows
application in the home, up over 13% from a 24th ranking a short six months
ago. That makes RealPlayer the fastest gainer in the rankings.

On the Road with SMIL
While things have been a relatively quiet lately in the trade press, SMIL
demonstration sessions are popping up all over the world. This week, CWI
is providing a demo of GRiNS at the ACM Multimedia 98 Conference in
Bristol, UK. RealNetworks will be rolling out the G2 carpet at the Web 98
Conference in Boston, USA on September 24. Real will also be making
appearances at Fall Internet World 1998 in October. No word yet if SMIL is
Real's on the agenda for that event.
