Thought I'd pass this on to the list. Come hear fellow list members talk about SMIL! ----- A breakfast meeting sponsored by INTERSHOP Communications Inc. and DCI, featuring SMIL: The future of Web Multimedia, will be presented on Wednesday, September 2nd, 1998 in room 105 of the Hynes Convention Center from 7a.m. - 8:30a.m. The New England Chapter of the National Association of Webmasters will host the event. Synchronized Multimedia Integration Language or SMIL, (pronounced smile), has only recently become popular. “With endorsements from the World Wide Web Consortium, (W3C), and companies like RealNetworks, Allaire, Veon and other companies producing multimedia content using this new language,” says NAW New England Program Director B.K. DeLong, “SMIL’s popularity will soar.” SMIL enables authors to bring television-like content to the Web, avoiding the limitations imposed on traditional television by lowering the bandwidth requirements for transmitting multimedia content over the Internet. Using a simple HTML like tags, you can now synchronize audio and video clips with the text and images on your web pages. SMIL makes producing audio-visual content easy since it does not require learning a programming language and can be done using any text editor. Speakers at the NAW’s New England Chapter breakfast include the “father” of SMIL , Philipp Hoschka. Mr. Hoschka from the W3C Consortium at M.I.T.,will give an overview of this new medium. Also speaking will be Dr. Lloyd Rutledge, from the Centrum voor Wiskunde en Informatica (CWI) in Amsterdam, who will demo a SMIL player and editor developed by the Center. Geoff Freed, from the WGBH/PBS National Center for Accessible Media, will highlight the features in SMIL that make multimedia more accessible to those with disabilities. The breakfast is free to all NAW/WOW members and $10 for all non-members. After the breakfast, attendees may be interested in attending other presentations featured in the XML track presented by DCI as part of the e-business world conference. Please RSVP to me before August 31st. -- B.K.
