Olof, I couldn't help but notice your comment about working on server-generated smil-examples and I thought it will interest you and the rest of the list to hear about Veon's plans for the matter. Veon is about to release what is called the Media Activation Server. This is actually server-side Java that creates SMIL files on the fly according to script files and SMIL templates. The great example that we have running right now is creating SMIL presentations based on database queries. For example, a Real-Estate web site can offer an HTML query page for retrieving all the properties which fit certain criteria. The server will fetch visual, textual and vocal descriptions of the properties and will create one or many SMIL files according to the layout templates. The server will be distributed with a tool for creating SMIL files and turning them into templates as well as a scripting tool for generating the database (SQL) queries and defining flow control logic. I think that the ability to employ such server-side logic to create multimedia presentations according to user specification is a valuable addition to the "Why SMIL technology will prevail" list that was being compiled here. Also it is a clear and simple way to introduce the power of a scripting language to support flow control and advanced logic while still maintaining the declarative format which has its own merits as previously described on the list. -/udi Udi Peleg Chief Technology Officer Veon, Inc.
