University of Sheffield: PhD studentship on information extraction for knowledge management

Start date of the studentship: October 2010 or before
Length: three years, subject to satisfactory progress
Stipend: £13,290 per annum
More details: The studentship provides payment of tuition fees at the UK/EU rate (this means that non EU candidates can only be considered if they have alternative sources of funding -- we cannot provide those)
Closing date for submissions is 25.03.2010. 
Interviews (via videoconference or telephone for candidates not in Sheffield) will be held Monday 12.4.2010

TOPIC
The project is funded by Rolls-Royce plc as part of the £90m Samulet program. The studentship will concern the study of models of information extraction based on Machine Learning that enable porting to different corpora in the same domain with limited or no training. Application will be to real world scenarios and data at Rolls-royce plc. 


CRITERIA FOR SELECTION
Candidates should hold at a first class honour degree or masters degree in Computer Science or a related discipline. The candidate should have excellent computer programming skills (including Java); analytic, presentational, communication and effective interpersonal skills; ability to work effectively within the research team, and a proven capacity to work to and meet deadlines. It is required knowledge of and experience in one of: 
Natural Language Processing, 
Information extraction from text, 
Text processing, 
Machine learning
Information retrieval.
