While editors are a great thing, and I'm working on one =), I'd say it's
almost a truism that it's important that they are not *required*. Being
able to delve in, fire up emacs and write up statements is for some
reason in some situations still the way to go; an example that comes to
mind is fixing some problem with some graph through a console ssh session.

See also how many people are entering HTML by hand, even though it's
much easier to do with a decent graphical editor.
