Sesame Open Source release

(Apologies if you are receiving multiple copies)

Dear all,

We are very proud to announce the Open Source release of Sesame,
the RDF and RDF Schema Storage and Querying service, under the
terms of the GNU Lesser General Public License (LGPL).

Sesame was originally developed by Aidministrator Nederland b.v.
[http://www.aidministrator.nl/] as a research prototype in the
context of the European IST Project On-To-Knowledge
[http://www.ontoknowledge.org]. Work on Sesame in this project
still continues by our Bulgarian project partner OntoText
[http://www.ontotext.com].

As a follow-up, Aidministrator and the NLnet Foundation
[http://www.nlnet.nl/] have joined together for a two-year Open
Source development project in which Sesame will be further
developed to a full-grown RDF and RDF Schema storage and querying
architecture.

Currently, Sesame offers:

         - SAIL, a (draft) standardized simple API for storing of and
inferencing over RDF and RDF Schema.
         - Support for deployment on MySQL and PostgreSQL databases.
         - Optional support for deployment on generic SQL92 DBMSs.
         - An RQL Query Engine, implementing part of the language.
         - A data administration module.
         - An RDF Export module.
         - Concurency control.

Future developments on the TODO list:

         - Extend support for RQL to implement the language
completely.
         - delete on per-statements basis (partially done).
         - (Partial) support for DAML+OIL inferencing.
         - Integration of a (graphical) visualization module.
         - Development of a SOAP protocol handler.
         - Improved transaction support.
         - Versioning support.
         - Improved security support.
         - Performance improvements for storing and querying data
         - Support for other databases.

Needless to say, we are very excited about this opportunity, and
we invite everyone to download Sesame, to scrutinize its
functioning, and of course to give us feedback, thus helping us
develop it further. Of course, if you wish to participate even
more actively in Sesame's development, we would very much welcome
that as well!
