Subject: Minutes (was Re: SIMILE Call 1-2pm Eastern Friday March 14)
Here are the draft minutes of the teleconference held 3/14/03. Let me know if you have any corrections you would like to have made.
Minutes: Simile PI Telecon 3/14/03
Attending:
Mick Bass,
Mark Butler,
Eric Miller,
MacKenzie Smith,
Rob Tansley,
David Karger,
Kevin Smathers
Agenda:
1. DSpace History System Statement of Work
Propose Simile work be done fixed cost:
Jason Kinner proposed to fill contract 3-4m SOW items.
General agreement to have Jason work on the contract.
Mick and David to generate the PO, need to attach justification for contractor.
Mick to initiate process with David and Lissa re documentation
2. Immediate next steps for Simile
Need:
Use cases and project defn
History started
Initial design discussions
Architectural alternatives
Cast potential implementation paths into specific work
Divide into specific work content for MacKenzie, Karger, Miller posts
Tansley, Butler, Bass proposed this timeline
Mark and Mick to take discussions on use cases -> reviewable doc
Due mid next week.
History system procurement being started up. Karger and Bass leading.
Use case doc review next Friday, this meeting. All to prepare.
Design workshop to occur in Bristol:
- Initial conversations about alternatives for implementation
- Genesis use?
- Karger's Haystack stuff
- Plus use cases
=> write up alternatives with first read on concensus - publish
to http://web.mit.edu/simile
Use April 4 conf call to discuss alternatives.
May write strawman position descriptions re each proposal
May slip to April 15 instead if orgs can't follow timeline.
Mid to late April get job postings up, start work by begin July.
Q: What do PIs need to provide to make design workshop successful?
A: prompt response to queries re use cases & insights or refs you
think we should be considering re architecture in light of use
cases.
Mark: Want contribution so that we get shared ownership. Unfortunate
that PIs aren't participating in design workshop directly.
Mark: Probably iterative process -- need to cycle around through
use cases, design, clarification, redesign. Will need to get full
group together.
Mick: Agree re iterative. Mid to late April workshop in Cambridge
seems reasonable.
<David joins>
Rob: Sounding boards before workshop to get a few positions on the
table, need something more than a blank worksheet.
Mick: Workshop is to move from blank sheet to set of questions that
we can respond to as PIs
Eric: Propose 9th-10th of April
Mick: ok.
Kevin: Will be at DOCsec in Baltimore 7-10th
Mick: Need several sessions of 90m to 2h each. (one 4hrs slot)
Mick: Proposal: Wed. 9th lunch@noon, 1-6pm working meeting.
Kevin to report on availability. Fallback 1-5pm Thu 10th.
3. Miscellaneous:
Future times for telecons in question. All PIs are not
available at any time for Thu or Fri. Need to either move
to another day or deconflict -- try Thu, Fri with iteration.
Action: Dave, MacKenzie, Eric to unconstrain Th/Fr
availability where possible, and resubmit to Mick.
Mick: Conference presentation submission, request comments
if we have any.
Request David consider student to Bristol wrt design workshop
David: Please explain goals of workshop
Mark: Communicate use-cases to people so that they can plan ahead
and get involved in design
Dennis to sit down with Genesis, and explore Haystack as a use
case for Genesis.
David: Could either send Dennis or David Huyn or Nick Matsakis;
need info re: workshop to decide which/whether to send.
Mark, Mick (and Kevin) action: inform re flavor of sessions
so that David & MacKenzie can id people appropriate.
Mark: May be rushing workshop; need use-case data to feed into
workshop.
?: Not an analytical design doc, but id of dependencies on external
projects.
Workshop to remain as is until Mark and Mick can propose sessions,
desired outcomes.
Eric: Barbara Attilic -- Virtual International Authority File --
Barbara considers Davids ideas applicable to VIAF; VIAF aplicable
to SemWeb. 300k records VIAF test app is in place (phase 1) and
useing OAI to sync repositories. Phase 4 will link
authorities on the web. Personal names, corporate names, geo
context, etc.
Prototype vocabs as classifications for articles that they plan
to purchase
Targeting use cases as putting up name/authority files or subject
classification systems so that others can map their data into it.
VIAF is applicable to that use.
Deutsche Bibliotek is interested in this as well.
If we get to integrating lookup services, and a testbed such as
Sloan to see how it can be done, then VIAF is an applicable use.
Barbara is very interested in getting Libraries integrated into
the SemWeb.
OCLC is only newly involved, but LOC has been working on this for
past week.
Stumbling block is working with three major library systems... but
as this progresses Barbara expects to put up page on LOC site.
Early ppt presentations available -- but later presentations a bit
more promising.
Action: Eric to contact Barbara, seek permission to redistribute
appropriate materials to SIMILE team and/or to www-rdf-dspace@w3.org
as appropriate.
General agreement to use www-rdf-dspace@w3.org mailing list for
publicly-accessible simile discussions, as well as general
RDF/DSpace/Libraries topics.
Eric: Generally sees need for recipes or guidelines for other groups
to webify their data for better integration with other peoples systems.
