I'd like to announce a minor change to the purpose of this list. www-rdf-dspace was originally created to discuss application of RDF within DSpace, an open-source institutional repository and digital asset management system developed collaboratively by MIT Libraries and HP. A more recent and related effort, named SIMILE, will focus on creating a platform, derived and extended from the current DSpace system, that will provide a much richer set of capabilities with respect to metadata and information interoperability. SIMILE aims to reduce the friction between personal, community/departmental, and institutional/enterprise information environments. You can read more about SIMILE at: <http://web.mit.edu/dspace-dev/www/simile/> Collaborators include HP, MIT Libraries, MIT Lab for Computer Science, and W3C Semantic Web Advanced Development. A core strategy to establish the SIMILE platform is to fork a research-oriented variant of the current DSpace system, and extend the platform through application of RDF and semantic web techniques. It is a further objective to be able to deploy capabilities developed and demonstrated in SIMILE research, as appropriate, through the network of institutions that have adopted and deployed the current DSpace system. Because this is the case, the DSpace and SIMILE principle investigators, in conjuction with W3C, have decided to continue to use www-rdf-dspace, but re-purpose it for public discussion of progress and issues in the SIMILE project. We welcome feedback on this change in purpose. Please direct feedback to <mailto:www-rdf-dspace@w3.org>.
