What is wrong about it?
Documentation from they-who-invented-the-thing recommends that
technique:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/workshop/Author/dhtml/howto/ShortcutIcon.asp
It is an icon link, and it is a shortcut link. Presumably this would
allow for other types of links to icons for particular purposes in
future. rel="next icon" could provide an icon to display next to the
"Next" link on a toolbar such as
http://www.christophm.de/software/firefox/cmSiteNavigation/
