The above definition is rather generic, but it's hard to be concrete about the category for abstract models, which includes such specs as InfoSet and XQuery Data Model. (Part of) the rationale for this term is that spec editors and reviewers should think about characteristics that are common to all technologies in a category. For example, all specs that present an XML vocabulary need a namespace URI for that vocabulary, and typically suggest a favored namespace prefix also. All specs that present an API follow certain norms for API description, and so on. .................David Marston
