how to proxy protocol from Erik Aronesty on 1996-06-13 (www-proxy@w3.org from June 1996)

i've been browsing the web for a while but i can't seem to find this

on some HTTP proxies i issue a request
"GET http://www.void.com/ HTTP/1.0"

and get a response

on other HTTP proxies i issue a request
"GET http://www.void.com/ HTTP/1.0"

and get a response of 
HTTP/1.0 405 Method not allowed

is there another way of issuing a request?
