Multimodal Interaction Working Group Face to Face Meeting

The W3C Multimodal Interaction Working Group [1] held a face-to-face
meeting March 3-5 in Orlando, Florida. We thank Voxeo for providing
an excellent facility and for hosting a very productive meeting.

Our two main goals for this meeting were:

1. finalize the material to be included in the next Working Draft of the
Multimodal Architecture and Interfaces Specification [2]

2. define next steps in the authoring work, including demos to illustrate
how to author multimodal applications using the architecture.

For the next draft of the MMI Architecture and Interfaces specification,
which we expect to publish shortly, we will include:

1. diagrams showing life cycle event traffic during a typical
application

2. syntax examples for the life cycle events and an XML Schema for the life
cycle events

3. a glossary

4. some clarifications to the text

Other topics for possible inclusion in future drafts were discussed,
including instructions for third parties on how to
specify modality components, handling media streams,
error handling, and more detail on the relationship between the
Interaction Manager and the Runtime Framework.

With respect to the authoring activity, we discussed logistics on how
WG members could collaborate on implementing a sample application. We
will be moving forward with details on the authoring application
during teleconferences. We hope to publish a W3C Note on authoring in
the summer, which will include a description of the implementation
context and sample code.

We also had brief status discussions of InkML [3] and EMMA [4]. We
will be trying to recruit additional companies with an interest in ink
in order to make faster progress and get more input from interested
vendors. EMMA is in Candidate Recommendation stage now and we are
looking for Implementation Reports [5] from any organizations
(including companies, universities or government labs) who have
implemented EMMA. The reports are due by April 14.

Our next face-to-face meeting is scheduled for June 11-13, 2008 in
Saarbrueken, Germany, hosted by DFKI.
