Summary of W3C Multimodal Interaction WG Face to Face Meeting

The Multimodal Interaction Working Group met on September 19-21 in
Toronto. The meeting was hosted by Voice Genie.

Our main topics of discussion were MMI Architecture [1], EMMA [2]
and review of several related activities from other organizations.

The InkML activity [3] is holding a separate face to face meeting
(October 25-26) and an update on its status will be available after
that meeting.

Architecture

We continued with next steps on the MMI Architecture. We focused on:

1. the events that are used to communicate among the MMI components
2. protocols for transmitting events
3. event formats
4. classification into categories of events
5. models for subscribing to events.

Our goal is to publish an updated version of the MMI Architecture
before the next face to face meeting, 27-28 February, 2006.

EMMA

EMMA reached Last Call Working Draft status on September 16. The
deadline for comments was October 28. At the face to face meeting we
discussed testing and the implementation report as well as a few
remaining technical issues.

Related Activities:

We discussed the following IETF publications:

1. Remote user interfaces [4]
2. Media Server Control Protocol [5]
3. Distributed Multimodal Synchronization Protocol [6]

We intend to continue reviewing these proposals as they progress.

We also heard a presentation on AT&T's Florence dialog system [7],
which is relevant to our work on interaction management.

The next face to face meeting will be in conjunction with the W3C
Technical Plenary, 27 February - 3 March 2006, Cannes-Mandelieu,
France.
