INTRODUCTION

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------

Advances in mobile and ubiquitous computing, wireless communications, mobile
positioning and sensor technologies have given a rise to a new class of
mobile and ubiquitous applications and services that are aware of the
context of the application usage. Context-aware applications are able to
modify and adapt their behaviour, operations and interface to best meet the
user's current and continuously changing context without explicit user
intervention. Context represents any information that can be used to
characterize the situation of entities that are considered relevant to the
interaction between a user and an application, such as the user location,
his preferences, his activities, nearby people and objects, the
environmental conditions, the availability of computing and communication
resources etc. Context-aware applications provide enhanced usability,
minimize distraction and needed attention of the user and can be used in
various application domains, such as traveller guides, smart homes, mobile
games, disaster management, etc.

Context-aware computing has attracted much attention from researchers in
recent years and several context-aware systems, frameworks and applications
have been developed to demonstrate the usefulness of technologies and
concepts. It also opens up a lot of novel research and development
opportunities and poses new challenges upon mobile and ubiquitous computing
technologies and systems.

The book Context-Aware Mobile and Ubiquitous Computing for Enhanced
Usability: Adaptive Technologies and Applications is focused on the
context-aware mobile and ubiquitous computing research theme, which attracts
a lot of attention from the Mobile and Ubiquitous Computing, as well as
Mobile and Wireless Applications and Services research communities. The book
is oriented toward fundamental concepts, theoretical issues and
context-aware technologies and applications, which have become of relevant
interest for next-generation mobile and ubiquitous systems and services.

To create successful context-aware applications and services in highly
dynamic, mobile environments where user is always on the move and nearby
resources and network features constantly change, a lot of research issues
must be considered, such as:

- Context sensing and acquisition,

- Context modelling and management

- Processing, aggregation and reasoning on contextual data,

- Context-aware middleware and platforms,

- Service-oriented frameworks and architecture of context-aware systems

- Security and privacy of context-aware systems and context data

- Knowledge discovery and mining over historical and streaming context data,
etc.

Context-aware computing is a research area that is still growing and every
related study and research work contributes to richness of this field. The
objective of this book is to provide throughout insight in main concepts of
context-awareness, which led to enhanced usability of mobile and ubiquitous
applications and services. The understanding of these concepts ultimately
leads to more effective design and implementation of mobile and ubiquitous
systems and services that can access accurate, high quality context
information on the fly in highly dynamic environments and adapt their
behaviour accordingly.

OBJECTIVES

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------

The mission of the book is to bring together high-quality chapters
investigating the emerging field of context-aware mobile and ubiquitous
computing. The book aims to provide thorough insights in the fundamentals,
state-of-the-art technological foundations, the emerging applications and
services, as well as future trends of context-awareness that enhance
usability of mobile and ubiquitous applications and services. In this
respect, this book will stimulate the submission of chapters from
highly-referred researchers in the field.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------

TARGET AUDIENCE

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------

The book appeals to a broad computer science and computer engineering
audience, including researchers, PhD students, graduate students and
practitioners in Computer Science and Computer Engineering. It is
considerably valuable to all kind of specialists in mobile and ubiquitous
computing, by covering all important concepts of context-awareness in
development of context-aware applications and services.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES AND INSTRUCTIONS

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------

Authors are invited to submit on or before October 31, 2007, a 2-5 page
manuscript proposal clearly explaining the mission and concerns of the
proposed chapter via e-mail to Dragan Stojanovic (dragans@elfak.ni.ac.yu),
editor.

Authors of accepted proposals will be notified by November 30, 2007 about
the status of their proposals and will receive the guidelines for preparing
the chapter and terms and definitions.

The authors of accepted proposals will have to submit the final chapter
until March 15, 2008. Chapters, consisting of 7,000-10,000 words (including
7-10 related terms and their appropriate definitions), should be original
and should not have been submitted for publication or published elsewhere.
All submitted chapters will be reviewed on a double-blind review basis.
