We're OFF! Count me in. So, who will come up with the money? Should we ask the carriers? How's this for a pitch.... Dear Mr. Carrier, you are suffering needless churn as a result of poor application/WAP site selection. This can only be solved by the development community if you give them the proper tools. You must all chip in. Your pro-rata share of the effort is $x.00. Failure to comply with this request will result in a complete drop off of available content for your network. You have 4 days. Seriously, should CTIA fund the effort? Of course, that's just my opinion, I could be wrong. this is feasible. some venture capital, 1 milion $$ to me, 1 milion $$ to Andrea, a good position for boths in the new company, and off we go! ;) Luca ----- Original Message ----- From: Dale Gonzalez <mailto:dale.gonzalez@air2web.com> To: public-ddwg@w3.org ; www-mobile@w3.org Sent: Wednesday, July 27, 2005 3:01 PM Subject: RE: Mobile phone capabilities list? Thanks Luca. I certainly see where being able to lookup device info based on the IMEI would be cool. However, it seems like: a) soon there won't be a guaranteed correlation between the IMEI and device capabilities. What you'll end up with is "for this IMEI with the standard shipped software load, this is what you can expect - however, your millage may vary. ", b) gathering the necessary information about the IMEI info in the field is going to be challenging - at least as challenging as getting good device info from the manufacturers, c) IMEI isn't always (often?) available to application writers. In my opinion, this makes IMEI of limited utility. I guess my view is that given all of the challenges associated with collecting and verifying this data and the limited number of hours/people available to tackle the problem, we would be better served focusing our attention somewhere else. I love WURFL. I would rather see an open source, formal program for certifying the data it provides and closing any gaps between it and "commercial" solutions. Of course, that's just my opinion, I could be wrong. ________________________________ From: www-mobile-request@w3.org [mailto:www-mobile-request@w3.org] On Behalf Of Luca Passani Sent: Wednesday, July 27, 2005 9:52 AM To: public-ddwg@w3.org; www-mobile@w3.org Subject: Re: Mobile phone capabilities list? >Or am I missing something. you are missing the part where we stated that IMEI would just be an *extra* way to identify the device as opposed to the only way. Seems to me that using user-agent/connect info is better than IMEI. IMEI is tied directly to the hardware. As the devices become more and more advanced, the client that the user is using - which is the thing that must be adapted to - will be downloadable and only have a passing association with the hardware. Or am I missing something. ________________________________ From: www-mobile-request@w3.org [mailto:www-mobile-request@w3.org] On Behalf Of Luca Passani Sent: Tuesday, July 26, 2005 3:13 AM To: public-ddwg@w3.org; www-mobile@w3.org Subject: RE: Mobile phone capabilities list? I was told offline that IMEI is only GSM and CDMA too. Quite frankly, I still don't see why we should give up on such a powerful unique key to device capabilities, but it explains why "purists" don't like the idea :-) Of course, I will consider seriously the creation of the IMEI module for WURFL in the months to come. Is there any operator willing to put some money there? Luca
