AOL, NTT DOCOMO FORM GLOBAL ALLIANCE America Online and NTT DoCoMo have announced a $100-million deal that gives DoCoMo a 42% stake in AOL Japan, and gives AOL access to DoCoMo's wildly popular i-Mode technology. AOL Japan has been struggling to attract subscribers -- a problem exacerbated by the comparatively low PC penetration rate in Japan. "America Online has had great trouble making progress here," says an industry analyst. "All the growth is in wireless." The agreement gives both companies the opportunity to capitalize on transferring AOL's content, as well as AOL-Mail and AOL Instant Messenger, to the i-Mode format.
