DOCOMO I-MODE EYES GLOBAL MARKET NTT DoCoMo's alliance with America Online to offer Net-based services to cell phone users will give DoCoMo's popular i-Mode service its first foothold in the lucrative U.S. market. "Strategically, it's a good thing to do," says a telecom analyst. "They become seen as a global player instead of a mostly domestic play." And although the alliance doesn't promise huge revenue increases to DoCoMo, the access to AOL content makes the Japanese giant much more attractive to potential U.S. cell phone partners. Separately, it's rumored that DoCoMo is eyeing the cell phone business of Australia's second-largest telecommunications carrier, Cable & Wireless Optus.
