MathML objects certainly are going to be much smaller than the
corresponding gifs. I expect that the same is true for any bitmap
I hesitate to say "any XML" because I can imagine a possibly perverse,
though possibly useful XML to describe a bitmap format. (It would
be useful if XML processing could be useful with it.)
But bitmap formats are not scalable. That makes them long term
We'll have to see what we get with the new scalable vector graphics
format that has recently been announced for consideration by W3C.
(Hmmm... what's the size of objects in other scalable graphic formats?)
