There was a long discussion about this with NS, DC, DG, BM, and DF. It mostly covered topics mentioned in 'e)' above. The discussion ranged from allowing strings, specifying the "fixity", and providing a second means of knowing how to speak it, with the first (functional) notation aiding navigation. The main participants decided to continue this in a call on Friday.
