well we tried to make the MathML specification itself fairly readable, 
so you might like to start there. At least the first couple of chapters 
should give a fairly gentle overview of what MathML is about.

The only book I know that is specifically about MathML is this one 
that's a bit old now (and I must admit I can't really remember its contents)
