I would extend the "prefered renderer" option by a 
ordered list of renderers, like

<html pref:renderer="mathplayer techexplorer images css">

than the stylesheets looks for 

1.) MathPlayer installed?  (if not go to 2.)
2.) Techexplorer installed (if not go to 3.)
3.) do the math nodes have "altimg" attributes? (if not go to 4)
4.) css
