The text of the mathml spec allows attributes from any non-mathml namespace on every element any mathml processor should just ignore this if does not "know" the namespace. Of course dtd needs extending if you need the documents to be dtd valid but there is a hook for this in the dtd, basically you can follow the model of the xlink namespace which is allowed in the joint xhtml+mathml dtd everywhere.
