Using w3c or www to fetch tar.gz files?

Help?   I'm feeling kinda foolish.

If I do this, I don't get anything.
> www http://www.w3.org/Library/w3c-libwww.tar.gz -o /tmp/w3c-libwww.tar.gz
> ls -l /tmp/w3c-libwww.tar.gz
-rw-rw-r--   1 bhyde           0 Oct 17 10:20 /tmp/w3c-libwww.tar.gz


If I do this I get something, but it's full of headers and such.
> www -raw http://www.w3.org/Library/w3c-libwww.tar.gz -o /tmp/w3c-libwww.tar.gz
> ls -l /tmp/w3c-libwww.tar.gz
-rw-rw-r--   1 bhyde     1480702 Oct 17 10:20 /tmp/w3c-libwww.tar.gz


If I do this I again don't get anything.
> www -source http://www.w3.org/Library/w3c-libwww.tar.gz -o /tmp/w3c-libwww.tar.gz
> ls -l /tmp/w3c-libwww.tar.gz
-rw-rw-r--   1 bhyde           0 Oct 17 10:21 /tmp/w3c-libwww.tar.gz

Fetching a jpg seems to work.  I have analagous problems with w3c.

Can someone offer me a clue?
