help required on Unix shutdown/startup!

Hi

I want to know for how much lomg time should a Unix server be kept
running before it has to be shutdown for maintenance. Also, where is the
configuration script (or file) for this in the system (like
Solaris/Linux), if at all there is one.
Please help me in this regard as to where is the information for the
shutting down of Unix servers after some days.
