Thanks to Yves I found some references about registering a mime type:
ftp://ftp.isi.edu/in-notes/rfc2048.txt section 2.1.  "Registration Trees
and Subtype Names" describes some registration issues, and IANA has a
registration form (http://www.isi.edu/cgi-bin/iana/mediatypes.pl ).
