In addition to the other suggestions --
try:
www.ice.com/java/icemail/index.shtml
which builds on the JavaMail API
and:
www.ice.com/java/icemh/index.shtml
for a mail store.
Both items, and other useful Java things on this
site have source available.

With the packages on this site you can handle both the client and the server
side of a mail system, including POP3.
