Are you sure then that the GIF is sent and not the PNG? try to remove all
PNG files or set the PNG quality to 0.5 in the default indexer then
reindex the Icons directory and see if it happens again.

As I said the server is sending the right bytes. If a specific browser
have a problem with PNG images without the conenction to be cut, then..
you may write a short filter that will add a Connection: close on each
reply! Of course it is not perfect eprformance-wise as you won't take
benefit of HTTP/1.1 keepalive features but...
