dave: it's complicated and there are no shortcuts rather than
read 50 pages
ri: I understand where you're coming from, and it's one of the
reasons i made the spec developer's techniques checklist (and
made it concertina). See eg.

... In the previous charmod i convinced the group to put a list
of just the mustard at the end in an appendix

bit hidden and quite long too, though. Perhaps something like
that would also help here (?) (just thinking off the top of my
head), and perhaps we should put it at the top this time as a
kind of / part of an executive summary, with some signposting
to break it up.??
