It is both correct and sensible for the visual effect of "hanging indentation" to use: <div style="margin-left:2em;"> <p>...</p> <p>...</p> </div> This is valid HTML 4.0 and 4.01, valid XHTML 1.0, 1.1 and 2.0 (according to most recent drafts) and, if you were to move the styling into a <style>...</style> element at the top, would also be valid HTML 3.2.
