Why don't we add the <lang="en"> element in addition to <span lang="en"> (now <lang> is an attribute)? It will make the xhtml docs smaller. examples: [xhtml now] <span lang="it">BuioOmega</span> is a rockband [my proposal] <lang="it">BuioOmega</span> is a rockband [xhtml now] <span class="artist" lang="it">BuioOmega</span> [my proposal] in this case it can be written both <span class="artist" lang="it">BuioOmega</span> the same] and <span class="artist"><lang="it">BuioOmega</lang></span> What do you think?
