The XML-Data draft specification may be relevant to this. It's an idea some people have been tossing about to constrain content and attributes along SQLish lines. The proposal is currently available from the Microsoft Web site (no, they didn't start it): <URL:http://www.microsoft.com/standards/xml/xmldata.htm>.
