anchors within tables

I have a table of names and want to create links (anchors) within the 
table.  I have been able to attach an anchor to the entire table but not 
to specific data within the table.  

This has not worked <table><tr><td><A NAME=JohnD>John Doe</A></td>

neither has <table><tr><A NAME=JohnD><td>John Doe</td></A> what am I 
doing wrong.  Thanks
