newsgroups

Dear people:

Once upon a time in cyberspace, I managed to peruse a newsgroup list.
Instead of an e-mail address, I saw the description labels as alt.something. 
Is there a way to determine what an address is by seeing the description 
label of alt.something?

Additionally, does anyone know how to purposefully come across a listing of
newsgroups so that I may analyse them again, in greater length?
